Approximately upto 95% of patient with low back pain do not require any special diagnosis test during the first month of symptoms. There are few red flag signs which suggests serious underlying conditions and person should consult Neurosurgeon for the same. These signs are like pain at extreme of age < 20 years and > 50 yrs. Lower back pain not improving on rest, associated with unexplained weight loss, urinary and bowel problem & weakness in lower limb or anaesthesia around perianal region requires evaluation on urgent basis. Neck pain radiating to hands and giving rise to weakness of limbs requires evaluation
Type of surgery:
If the patient requires surgical intervention after failed conservative management. One has to look for pathology being treated and asses the patient and decide whether open or minimal invasive spine surgery will be required .
Out come after treatment
Outcome of surgery depends on the disease and the neurological status of patient at the time of presentation. The outlook of spine surgery absolutely depend on its precise cause . as an example , acute strain injury requires minimal treatment, on the other hand disc prolapsed, lumbar canal stenos & spondylolisthesis etc requires surgery. Only around 5% of patient who had lower back pain require surgery. In today’s era of modern facilities surgery for the back is extremely safe with no major postoperative morbidity.
