Neck pain is quiet common after back pain . usually neck pain is secondary to muscle strain caused by bad posture. But neck pain can be secondary to underlying serious disease. One should consult if neck pain is associated with shooting pain into shoulder or arm or numbness or weakness in limbs..

Neck is flexible and provides great range of motion while it is supporting the weight of head also. Neck pain can be casued by :
Muscle strains – Overuse and abuse of neck muscle because of poor posture . leaning on comptures, tabs, smartphone etc for long time. Reading in bed can also strain neck muscles.
Joint attrition – With age like other joints there is wear and tear of neak joints also. Osteoarthritis cases destruction of cushions between the bone which leads to painfull movement os neck.
Nerve compression – Cervical disc prolapsed or outgrowth of bone can lead to compression over the nerve roots and cause pain
Injuries – Trauma to the neck can lead to fracure of bone and muscle injury.
Diseases – ankyloing spondylitis, rheumator arthritis and malignancy cal also lead to neck pain
Neck pain is mostly associated with bad posture associated with age related with wear and tear. To prevent neck pain one must keep the neck straight in the center. simple changes in your daily working may help. Consider trying to:
Use good posture. Keep neck straight
Take frequent breaks. After prolong works take short breaks and stretch neck and shoulder
Adjust your desk, chair and computer so that the monitor is at eye level.
Avoid holding the phone between your ear and shoulder while talking.
If you smoke, quit. Smoking can put you at higher risk of developing neck pain.
Avoid lifting heavy items with strap over your shoulder. The weight can strain your neck.
Sleep in a proper position. Your head and neck should be aligned with your body. Use a small pillow under your neck. Try sleeping on your back with your thighs elevated on pillows, which will flatten your spinal muscles.
When you have pain doctor will take history and examine you . he will check for power and numbness in limbs. He will advise you required test depending on need like MRI Cervical spine or dynamic Xray cervical spine and some time few blood tests are also required.
