Brain Tumour
What is brain tumour ?
Abnormal mass of cells in brain is called as brain tumour. There are many types of brain tumour .It may be primary which starts in the brain of secondary brain tumour which travels to brain from another area in the body. Primary brain tumour may be benign or malignant. Benign brain tumour are slow growing and non cancerous however malignant brain tumour grow rapidly and are cancerous.
Why symptoms occur ?
Depending on the location of the tumour and the way tumour grows it can cause symptoms.brain tumour causes symptoms by many ways:
- Damaging the normal brain cells
- Displacing and compressing the brain tissue
- Occupying a large area in the brain and increasing the intra cranial pressure
- Irritating the brain cells and causing seizures (fits)
- Blocking the normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pathway and leading to hydrocephalus.
What are the symptoms?
Common symptoms of brain tumour are:
- Early morning headache and headache not relived even by medication
- Recent change in personality, difficulty in understanding , speaking and memory
- Decrease vision, double vision, hearing problem
- Seizures or convulsions
- Weakness(paralysis), decrease sensation in limbs or face
- Difficulty in walking, balancing issue while walking
- Unexplained Nausea and vomiting which may be associated with headache
- Altered behaviour or sensorium
Diagnosis of brain tumour
MRI brain with contrast should be done to look for brain tumour. And few special sequence of MRI brain is some time required to look for brain tumour and some time angiogram is also done to look for position and relation of major blood vessels of brain
Brain tumour surgery
Aim of surgery is to get tissue diagnosis, and remove tumour within the safety limits with out causing neurological deficits. There are many king of surgery depending on the location of tumour.
- Craniotomy for brain tumour
- Image guided / Stereotactic brain surgery
- Endoscopic brain surgery
