Stroke surgery
sudden abrupt interruption of the blood flow to the part of brain lead to loss of neurological function. It is important to restore the blood supply to the brain as soon as possible so that brain cells do not die with our oxygen and lack of nutrients. Storke may be-
- Ischemic Stroke
- Transient ischemic attack (TIA)
- Hemorrhagic Stroke
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) is the bleeding in the subarachnoid space common cause of it is cerebral aneurysm or the rupture of an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), Intracerebral Hemorrhage is the bleeding in the brain tissue secondary to chnges in the arteries as a result of long term hypertension.
Risk Factors
Although they are more common in older adults, strokes can occur at any age.Smoking, Hypertension, History of TIAs, Diabetes:. High blood cholesterol, Physical inactivity and obesity
Symptoms
Weakness of limbs or face, speech problem , decrease vision, incardination, altered sensorium are major symptoms
Treatment
Accurate diagnosis and timely intervention is key to success
Ischemic Stroke Treatment
Ischemic stroke is treated by removing obstruction and restoring blood flow to the brain.
Emergency Surgical Stroke Treatment: Neurointerventional Procedures
Hemorrhagic Stroke Treatment
Hemorrhagic stroke usually requires surgery to relieve intracranial (within the skull) pressure caused by bleeding. Surgical treatment for hemorrhagic stroke caused by an aneurysm or defective blood vessel can prevent additional strokes. Surgery may be performed to seal off the defective blood vessel and redirect blood flow to other vessels that supply blood to the same region of the brain.
Surgery/Clipping/ endovascular surgery
After angiogram location of aneurysm is identified and surgical clipping or endovascular coiling is done.
Craniotomy or evacuation of hematoma
In case of intracranial hemorrhage craniotomy and evacuation of hematoma / decompressive craniectomy is done to save life.
Out come
It depends on the neurological status at the time of surgery and co morbidities.
